Voltage Rise Calculation

This web page can be used to calculate the voltage rise associated with the application of a shunt capacitor bank or harmonic filter bank on a power system. When applying shunt capacitor banks or harmonic filter banks, it is important to calculate the resulting voltage rise. If to high, the kvar size or kvar increment of the bank should be limited. This is typically done by applying the capacitor/filter banks as single step or multi-step automatic banks .

The voltage rise resulting from the application of a shunt capacitor bank is related to the system strength (i.e. KVAsc) and kvar of the bank. If the KVAsc is not know, it can be calculated in Table 1.  If known, you may proceed to Table 2.
